Janice’s research interests involve examining the role of nutrition and exercise in preventing and treating risks for obesity and type 2 diabetes across the lifespan. She applies mixed-methods approaches to examining factors that influence lifestyle choices, and in the development and evaluation of community-based tailored interventions. She served as a Commissioner on the Birmingham Commission for Healthy Ageing in the 21st Century, and is a Fellow and Past Vice President of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She has recently been awarded the ACSM Citation Award for her significant research, scholarship, and service contributions to sports medicine and/or the exercise sciences. She is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS).
