The period of midlife for a male is often one that can be difficult to navigate given the limited information we have to understand this significant ‘slice of life’. Throw sport into the mix, a site in which men are supposed to excel, and an array of issues around ageing, masculinities and self-identity are likely to emerge. This presentation will reflect on a personal perspective of life involved in elite level sport and the transition to midlife and beyond. It will also utilise in depth qualitative data from Masters level athletes to illuminate the relationship between men, sport and the transition from ‘young to old’.
