Meriel is a qualified Physiotherapist and worked in the NHS for several years specialising in neurology and specifically stroke rehabilitation. She has also worked for a number of years in India and Indonesia in both disaster and development projects related to disability and rehabilitation. Meriel’s MSc in Medical Anthropology was completed in 2002 (London) and PhD in 2009 through which she explored health seeking behaviour and rehabilitation following stroke in Aceh, Indonesia. Her recent research in the UK has been varied, but includes a developing interest in the health and rehabilitation of people from BME backgrounds. She presented in a previous ESRC seminar series on Ageing and Ethnicity which culminated in a special issue in Aging and Society published in 2015 for which she was guest editor.
